OCEAN EXPLORATION

The desire to explore new territories seeking great and important discoveries has always been a part of human history, promoting the progress of our species. The deep ocean, however, continues to be a great stranger to us, an unexplored world filled with mysteries waiting to be unraveled.

That is why one of IMO’s main goals is tackling the great challenge of descending into hadal depths, contributing to the exploration and study of this habitat, which is just as fascinating as unexplored.

ATACAMA HADAL

Valparaíso-Antofagasta-Arica

Conducted on board the research vessel DSSV Pressure Drop, the Atacama Hadal exploration is known for the first manned descent in history into the Atacama Trench thanks to the technology of the Limiting Factor submersible. IMO scientists were able to observe the topography and ecosystems on the abyssal seafloor.

To carefully map and directly observe the seafloor of the Atacama Trench. The information obtained will allow us to select an optimal place to install sensors to study the abyssal ocean and the origin of Chile’s great earthquakes and tsunamis.
To discover and describe new organisms and ecosystems in the extreme depths of the Atacama Trench.

MOPEX

We took samples in eighteen stations over a zonal transect extending from the shallow coastal area to the continental slope and a meridional transect over the oceanic trench in the subduction zone.

To study, know, and understand mesoscale and deep-ocean processes determining the community structure and the food web of plankton, including nanoplankton, microplankton, mesozooplankton, macrozooplankton, and micronekton.
